Common questions
Folic acid and planning a pregnancy
Updated: November 2, 2026
Folic acid (B9) lowers the risk of neural-tube defects in the baby, so:
- Women planning a pregnancy should take 400 mcg a day, starting at least 1 month before conception and continuing to week 12.
- In some cases (a previous affected pregnancy, certain medicines, diabetes) a doctor prescribes more — don't raise it yourself.
- Choose a dedicated prenatal formula (with iodine, iron, D); regular sports vitamins and high-dose vitamin A aren't suitable.
Agree any supplement in pregnancy and breastfeeding with your gynaecologist.
